SALT LAKE CITY - Learn how to transform yourself into your favorite character in time for Comic Con.

Salt Lake Comic Con and The Leonardo are partnering up for a series of do-it-yourself workshops designed to teach people how to create their own character costumes. The first workshop, which will focus on recycling common materials to use in costumes, will be June 11 from 6-9 p.m. at The Leonardo in Salt Lake.

“Our fans are so passionate about dressing the parts of their favorite characters,” said Dan Farr, Salt Lake Comic Con co-founder and producer. “More and more we’re hearing how those that aren’t engaged in cosplay want to learn and get involved.”

Future workshops in the series will cover areas such as prosthetics and makeup, sewing basics, electronics, sound, light and movement, plastics and digital projects. All workshops will feature artists from The Leonardo, guest presenters, and materials for attendees to try out the techniques learned.

“Even if you don’t want to be a full on Cosplayer, these workshops will enable even beginners to get the basics down to fashion a costume for their favorite character,” said Bryan Brandenburg, Salt Lake Comic Con co-founder and vice-president of marketing. “It’s not just about saving money, it’s about beginning an engaging lifetime hobby.”

The June 11 workshop costs $30, and can be purchased online at saltlakecomiccon.com/comic-con-cosplay-classes. The site also offers a form where fans can apply to receive scholarships for one of the classes.
