At the parking lot, the trail is south of the restrooms. You arrive at the first junction quickly – turn right taking the Desolation Trail. At the next junction, go right over the rocky outcrop. Don’t take the trail down at this junction. The trail turns west and starts a series of long gradual switchbacks to the Salt Lake Overlook. You arrive at the Salt Lake Overlook at 2.5 miles into your hike. You know you have arrived there when the Salt Lake Valley comes into view. This is a great place to have lunch before continuing your loop into Thaynes Canyon. After lunch, continue south on the ridgeline where the trail goes over to Thaynes Canyon. At 3.9 miles you arrive at the junction, go left. It’s all downhill as you start a steep descent in Thaynes Canyon and back to the first trail junction. Dogs in Mill Creek Canyon: Salt Lake County requires dogs to be leashed in the entire canyon on even-numbered days. They are allowed unleashed on odd-numbered days, except in developed areas.
