BOUNTIFUL — Customers can now learn about sale prices on specific items when visiting a Smith’s Food & Drug.
That’s thanks to new mobile app available for both Android and iOS platforms for phone and tablet devices, a Smith’s press release said.
The app allows customers to read QR codes, check their fuel points, refill prescriptions and deliver feedback to the store, it said.
It’s part of an effort by the brand to reinvent itself and offer lower prices and a more satisfying customer shopping experience, the release said.
“We’re pleased to offer an even more affordable shopping experience at Smith’s,” said Marsha Gifford, Smith’s vice president public affairs.
“We want today’s customer to become a customer for life,” she said. “We are making a huge investment throughout many areas of the store to accomplish this.”
Technologies available to customers include:
Ґ Weekly ads, digitized and posted online free at smithsfoodanddrug.com
Ґ More than 100 downloadable coupons, which can be connected to customer rewards cards for clip-less coupon savings
Ґ The fuel points program, which offers discounts of between 10 cents and $1 a gallon
Smith’s customers reportedly experience the shortest average wait of any major grocery store Р on average 28 seconds, thanks to use of infrared laser technology that is coordinated with in-store software, the press release said.
Heat sensitive cameras interpret shopping time required, and that prepares the store to have the appropriate number of check stands open to reduce customers’ wait time.
Smith’s has grocery and drug stores in Bountiful, Farmington, Layton, Syracuse and Sunset. It maintains a regional office and plant in Layton.
Smith’s isn’t alone in taking groceries digital. Kroger has a similar app, as do Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, Sprouts, Walmart and Target.
The majority of these apps, like the Smith’s app, allow pictures and videos to be taken with the phone’s camera without the user’s permission, according to information from the Android store. The apps also require access to information about the phone user’s location.
