LAYTON – Everyone should have the chance to share their art with the world.
That’s the philosophy behind Snow Horse Art Gallery, an exhibit space attached to the Davis Conference Center in Layton. The gallery, which is open to artists of all ages and experience levels, is hosting an exhibit featuring local photographers now through Aug. 23.
“We want to give as many people as possible the chance to show their work in a nice exhibit space,” said Chad Hancey, vice chair for the Davis Arts Council and a major force behind the gallery. “It’s the main reason behind Snow Horse’s existence.”
The gallery hosts several exhibits throughout the year, the largest of which focuses on work by local high school students. Many of the exhibits are juried, but organizers try to find room on the walls for every entry that follows the posted rules.
“We try to hang everything we get,” said Hancey. “We don’t want to exclude anyone.”
The photography exhibit began when organizers noticed how many photographs were being submitted to their regular shows. In the last three years the gallery has been holding the exhibit, the number of photographs being submitted remains steady.
“I’ve noticed that there are photographers who come back every year and show their work,” he said.
According to Hancey, landscapes remain a dominant theme year after year.
“Some are from national parks, and some are of local geography like the Great Salt Lake,” he said. “There are also people who travel a great deal, and we kind of get shots from all around the world.”
Once the photography exhibit closes, a new one will be put up in its place.
“We’re bringing art to the community, so we try to have something on the wall every day of the year,” said Hancey. “There’s very few days when there’s nothing up there.”
