WOODS CROSS — A pair of Davis County soccer players has made their intentions known as to where they will play following their high school careers.
Kacie Anderson of Woods Cross and Lucas Cawley of the Portland Timbers Academy in Oregon, a Viewmont alumnus, have committed to playing soccer at Iowa Lakes and Utah Valley University, respectively, after completed stellar, yet different, high school soccer careers.
Anderson signed her letter of intent, said Iowa Lakes Community College coach Ammon Bennett in a statement, and Cawley has verbally committed to play for UVU, which will start its soccer program in the 2014 school year.
For Anderson, who played at Woods Cross High School as a midfielder, her commitment to Iowa Lakes comes after helping the Lady Wildcats reach the 4A State semi-finals. She played in 67 games, including all 18 last season, scoring a total of 10 goals in her high school career.
Anderson’s second goal this season was important, as it helped send the Wildcats to the semi-finals after having beaten Box Elder 2-1 in overtime.
“We are very excited to have her join us,” said Bennet. “From the moment we saw her during our tryout she demonstrated good pace and ball skill and the ability to attack out of the back. She will be a fine defender for us and I’m sure she will be a solid performer. We look forward to getting her here in early August when we start training.”
Anderson is one of two Davis County players to sign on with the Lakers. Dustyn Taylor of Northridge is also among the 15 players signed by Iowa Lakes. The majority of the college’s signees come from Utah, as 13 of the team’s 15 total commits hail from the state.
“We feel we have made significant strides with this group of athletes,” said Bennett. “We are eager to get these young women here at Iowa Lakes Community College in early August when we begin our training.”
Cawley’s commitment to play for Utah Valley University comes as a bit of a surprise, as the Wolverines will not start playing soccer until the 2014 season.
However, the four-star recruit who played for both the Real Salt Lake academy in Arizona and the Portland Timbers, made the verbal commitment Tuesday.
Cawley, who played at Viewmont High School for a season before heading to the RSL academy, played for the Portland Timbers this past season and is ranked No. 78 in the IMG sports academy’s soccer program.
He is playing this season as a midfielder for the Timbers’ U18 squad after training in England over the summer. He is expected to graduate from the program in 2014.
Utah Valley University will play in the Western Athletic Conference in its first season with a men’s soccer program.
