The best horror comedies make you want to both laugh and kind of throw up a little.

“Snatchers,” part of this year’s Midnight Episodic Showcase, excels in both categories. A darkly funny look at teen sex, pregnancy and alien infestation (at least, I’m pretty sure that’s what it is), the show will have you rolling in the aisles before delivering a sucker punch of an ending. Though the web series runs only 65 minutes in total, it packs all the entertainment of a full-length movie.

The series opens with Sara, a popular teen whose ex-boyfriend recently returned from a trip to Mexico. Though he’s been acting “different,” she gives into pressure and has sex with him. When she wakes up the next day, however, she’s already pregnant, and by the next day she’s a full nine months along. Unfortunately, the thing in her belly isn’t human.

“Snatchers” has a wonderfully deadpan sense of humor, with everyone perfectly straddling the line between ridiculousness and believability. This is especially true of the two leads, Mary Nepi and Gabrielle Elyse, former best friends who are drawn back together by the suddenly wild circumstances. Both of them had fantastic line deliveries, and easily outshone the casts of the majority of big-budget teen comedies.

Of course, there’s also a ton of blood and corpses, as befits a proper horror movie. There’s also the monster, which would almost be cute if it didn’t have the tendency of making everyone who gets anywhere near it supremely dead.

I’ve never heard of the creative team behind “Snatchers” before, but I want to see more from these people. If this is what they can do with just over an hour, I’d love to see what they could pull off with more time and money.
