NORTH SALT LAKE — Over the next two weeks, Lauren Johnson will represent the state of Utah at the Distinguished Young Women National Finals in Mobile, Ala.

Johnson, a recent graduate of Woods Cross High, is one of 50 state representatives competing in the 57th annual scholarship event, according to a press release.

Judges will look at participants’ scholastic achievements, interviewing skills, fitness, talent and ability to express themselves, as they award $150,000 in scholarships and name a Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2014.

While at the scholarship program, competitors will complete community service projects, rehearse for the competition production and participate in team-building activities.

The theme of this year’s national outreach initiative is “Be Your Best Self,” and includes five elements:  “Be Healthy, Be Involved, Be Studious, Be Ambitions and Be Responsible.”

It is designed to bring attention to major concerns such as childhood obesity and high school drop out rates, and to help young people serve in their communities.

A live webcast of the national finals can be viewed at on Saturday, June 28 at 6 p.m.
