all starters scored in the first period and followed jake west's lead in tough defense
FIRST quarter only stats for jake west.
He beat 6'5' center to the tip so quickly that he literally sat on meacham's shoulder coming down AFTER he'd tipped the ball to wx teammates. video shows jake's waist band was above mecham's head at the point he touched the ball. Jake's first QUARTER stats were as follows
9 points 3 rebounds 3steals-ONE FOR A THUNDERING TURN AROUND DUNK and three assists. He then settled back into his specialty- playing defense. The state leading three point shooter in 4a., Meacham got NO threes with jake GUARDING HIM AND ONLY HAD 1 TOTAL FOR THE NIGHT.(meacham averages over 3 threes a game)
VERY energetic defense by the whole team held BOX ELDER to only 3 threes TOTAL against the wildcats. Jake ended up with 14 points plus at least 5 more rebounds and assists and 4 more steals after the first quarter. Jake sat out about 1 quarter as WX got so far ahead that coach street put in reserves. scoring was pretty even by the end of the game with Tyler stahle as usual leading all scorers with 17. Of note was the super defense WX played in initial quarter. They let off a bit with a 34-17 lead midway through the 2nd period allowing the BEES to get within 6 points twice but poured on good defense again to slowly build their lead back to 19 by the end of the game. Jr Matt Stevenson scored his first varsity points on VERY limited varsity time on a free throw in the last minute.
Of note was 12 rebounds , 4 points and many assists by starting senior power forward Tyler HALL and the assist, rebound and steal Zack Bamford recorded in his few minutes of play that coach street gave him.
bottom line JAKE WEST led a huge defensive effort in the first quarter plus was 3 for three including a three pointer to go with his breakaway dunk after stealing the ball from Meacham and a buzzer beating top of the key jump shot to end the period. Also of note was the 19 for 24 free throw shooting logged by the wildcats--a great improvement over the poor free throw shooting in their loss to MT CREST AT MC FRIDAY NIGHT WHERE 5 MISSED FREE THROWS IN THE FINAL 3 MINUTES GAVE MC THE CHANCE TO TIE THE GAME WITH THEIR LAST MINUTE 3.
the three underclassmen big men all had out standing nights on defense and the boards with austin B. adding 10 points and Mark 5. Peter H. scored no points but had some steals, blocks ,and rebounds in the limited time he played. Peter had a great JV game where he scored as well as being a big reason they came back from being down 11 at the half to a close overtime loss.
the three underclassmen playing center by committee are averaging over 13 points a game for our Varsity team combined with Austin B putting in almost 7 points a game and Peter H and Mark Evans tied at 3.56 points a game.
ALL in all this was a good comeback from the disappointing 2nd overtime loss Friday night. NOW BEAT SKYCREST FRIDAY! Lets keep up the pattern we've established on our wins of late with NS (non-stahle) starters early scoring and great defensive play which takes the pressure of Tyler Stahle when the other teams discover he is not the only scorer on the team. When Stahle passes for assists early the defenders are forced to back off of him which actually leads to more points that Stahle scores in the game. I think that is the key to the rest of the season and any post season play-the OTHER starters need to step up and even out the initial scoring so the other teams cannot just put their best defensive player on Tyler Stahle to shut down the whole team.
GO WILDCATS!!
