Police have no motive for the vandalism except, “they apparently thought it sounded like a good thing to do at the time,” said Kaysville Police Sgt. Shawn McKinnon. “They just jumped the fence and lit the field on fire.”
The area burned was 8 feet by 6 feet of artificial turf and initial damage estimates are between $5,000-$10,000. The field cost the Davis School District $2 million to build two years ago, McKinnon said.
Police were able to track the pair after rumors started on social media at Layton High, McKinnon said. Layton High’s administration alerted Davis High administrators and the school's resource officer. Police then went to Layton High to take the teens into custody.
The boys were booked on one count each of second-degree arson and one count of criminal trespass, McKinnon said. The Davis County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case prior to any formal charges being filed.
