FARMINGTON – Did you know the average last day for frost varies by nearly three weeks between Farmington and Bountiful’s Val Verda area?

Val Verda experiences its last frost, on average, on April 17, but Farmington can expect frost as late as May 5.

Such tidbits and a lot more substantive information is available in the new 2013 USU Gardening Calendar. It’s available for $12 at the Davis County Extension Office, Room 200 in the old Memorial Courthouse, 28 East State Street in Farmington.

USU Botanical Center members can get it for $6.

The calendar was put together by Britney Hunter, the Davis County-based Utah State University Horticulture Extension faculty member.

“It has garden tips throughout the whole year that apply to the Wasatch Front,” she said. In addition, gardening classes offered at the USU Botanical Center in Kaysville are noted.

Photos of gardens and other sites in the Botanical Center in Kaysville and Ogden Botanical Center anchor the pages for each month.

“The calendar would make an excellent gift for someone interested in gardening,” Hunter said. It is available just in time as a gift for the holidays.

As would be expected, January is a bit sparse on gardening activities and suggestions.

But the Jan. 16  entry highlights learning how to grow herbs inside for winter, with an icon indicating more information is available from extension publications.

On Jan. 24, gardeners are advised to start onion seeds indoors. More information is available from an extension publication.

“Explore the Garden Family Night: Snowshoeing from 6-8 p.m.” at the USU Botanical Center is listed with a note that a reservation is required.
