BOUNTIFUL — The annual Viewmont Invitational Wrestling Tournament will kick off at Viewmont High School starting Friday afternoon.
The tournament, considered one of the biggest tournaments of the year for local high schools, will feature some of the best high schools in the state.
The two day event, which starts Friday at 1:30 p.m., will have five Davis County high schools in attendance: Bountiful, Davis, Layton, Northridge and Viewmont high schools. Other teams invited to the tournament are American Fork, Box Elder, Cyprus, Delta, East, Emery, Evanston, Wyo., Logan, Millard, Morgan, Mountain Crest, Mountain View, Murray, Olympus, Pleasant Grove, Riverton, Roy, Salem Hills, San Juan, Skyline and South Summit.
Bingham and Payson are also on the list of invitees, but will compete in the junior varsity portion of the tournament only. Westlake and Emery high schools will only compete on the varsity level.
Bountiful will enter the tournament with some confidence, having recently been ranked seventh in the Utah High School Wrestling Rankings. Individually, the Braves will be bring in four wrestlers who are ranked in the top five in their respective weight classes.
Justin Horsely, at 132 pounds, is ranked fourth overall and could likely see Box Elder’s Shand Hardy and Westlake’s Brigg Butler, who are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in that weight class. At 138 pounds, Joey Barnett is ranked fifth and could be in a bracket with Box Elder’s Teagan Hubbard and Mountain Crest’s Rayden Lindley, ranked second and fourth respectively.
Lamar Gimmeson’s recent success at the 145-pound weight class has him ranked fifth overall. With Box Elder and Salem Hills in attendance, McKay Parrish (No. 2) and Walker Van Tassell (No. 4) could also be seen in the tournament.
Junior Hamilton is the last Braves’ wrestler ranked in the top six individually, and is third overall in the most recent rankings. Four of the five remaining ranked wrestlers will join Hamilton during the tournament, including top-ranked Jacoby Wildman of Logan and second-ranked Dallas Howard of Murray.
Box Elder’s Taylor Lancaster (No. 5) and Mountain Crest’s Jacob Fiefia (No. 6) are also scheduled to be at the tournament.
The Viewmont Invitational will wrap up Saturday afternoon, with the final matches starting at 3:30 p.m.
