VIEWMONT AND CLEARFIELD midfielders scramble to take control during the Vikings’ 1-0 victory.
VIEWMONT AND CLEARFIELD midfielders scramble to take control during the Vikings’ 1-0 victory.

Before classes even got underway at Viewmont High School, the girls soccer team had already played six games. Such is typical for the sport, as teams race to get non-league game under their belts before jumping into region action.

The Vikings played a trio of games last week, picking up every possible result in the process. Facing Class 6A teams Lone Peak, Weber and Clearfield, the Vikings went 1-1-1 a week ago, bringing their record to 3-1-2. Viewmont will get region play going on Thursday, Aug. 29 against Woods Cross.

On Aug. 15, Viewmont fell to Lone Peak 3-2. Sailor Uffens, the goal-scoring senior, netted both Viewmont goals, but the defense couldn’t stop the Knights, who took a 3-1 halftime lead that proved too much for Viewmont to overcome.

Two days later, Viewmont and Weber played to a 2-2 tie. Uffens was held without a goal for the first time on the season; however, Alexa Brown and Savannah Gibbons picked up the slack, registered a goal apiece.

The Vikings capped off the busy week with a 1-0 shutout over Clearfield. Uffens had her eighth goal of the year, and goalkeeper Lydia Pitt kept the Falcons at bay, as Viewmont had its third shutout of the season.

This week has been a lighter one for Viewmont, as the players got acclimated to the beginning of school. The Vikings play at Layton on Thursday. The two former Region 2 rivals had a pair of hotly contested games last season. Viewmont won the first meeting 1-0; game two ended in a 2-2 tie.

Once league games start, Viewmont will play eight Region 5 games to go along with one more non-region contest.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats’ slate wasn’t nearly as full last week. Woods Cross played just one game, a scoreless tie with Olympus on Aug. 17. Woods Cross began this week with a 1-1-2 record.

In preparation of their first Region 5 contest against Viewmont, the Wildcats faced Hillcrest on Tuesday (after our press deadline) as well as a game against Murray on Friday.
