Lady Vikes looking to take back Region 1 title

BOUNTIFUL -- Viewmont volleyball has built a tradition of success. The team won state championships in 2003 and 2004 and was the region champ from 2002-04. Last year the Vikings put together a strong season, but made way for a new region champ in Davis. This year the Vikes look to regain that title. Head coach Lori Salvo thinks the pieces are in place for the team, but realizes youth will be something to deal with. "I'm excited about this team. We have some up-and-coming kids who are willing to work their tails off," Salvo said. Amanda Carter highlights the starting lineup. The senior is the only holdover from the 2004 championship squad, who saw playing time. Carter plays alongside her twin sister Megan at outside hitter, along with Shayli Isoefa.

Isoefa, a sophomore, might also see minutes at middle blocker behind junior Ada Robinson and sophomore Natalie Bonner. Robinson is 5-foot-10 but can sky, as evident by her two titles as the state 5-A high jump champion.

Senior Whitney Johnson will anchor the team at setter. Salvo isn't sure if the Vikes will go with a 5-1 or 6-2 lineup and says it all depends on the play of Johnston and sophomore setter Sarah Page.

If both play well, then Viewmont will go with the 6-2 allowing both to see time.

Rounding out the lineup are Britny Mortenson and Mel Green, who'll serve as utility players, and Candice Davis at libero.

"Candice is a good server so it's nice to see the rule change allowing the libero to serve," said Salvo.

Salvo has been impressed with her team so far. Viewmont opened up play last weekend at the Skyline Tournament. The group lost on the first day, but battled back to win the bronze division.

"We did as well as we could after losing the first day," Salvo said. "We tried a few lineups and five of our nine matches went to five games so our young players got a lot of playing time."

The Vikes are back in action today at Taylorsville. After that they'll travel to the Northridge Tournament Labor Day weekend. Region 1 play begins Sept. 12 at Clearfield for the Vikings.
