Vikings 1, Darts 2 at state wrestling

The Viewmont Vikings closed the chapter on its sixth state championship Friday night, while the Davis Darts wrote up some history of its own.

Viewmont ran away with its six 5A state wrestling championship in 8 years and second straight title as it scored 192 points. Davis came from behind in the last three rounds of the tournament to finish second with 145.5 points.

Brayden Humphreys of Layton beat Ron Wardleigh of Fremont, 9-3 to win at 103.

The Vikings' Mike Winger (125) earned an escape with 8 second left in the final to beat Fremont's Matt Finger, 1-0.

Josh Smoot dropped to Bingham's Kade Moss in the 130 final, 7-0.

At 135, Tayler Humphreys was stopped by Chase Burns of West Jordan, 9-2.

In the anticipated showdown between Davis' Braiden Hart and Ikeru Abe at 140 the fans were not disappointed as Hart edged Abe 3-2.

Danner Kjar picked up the title at 145 by edging Clint Jacob of Pleasant Grove, 2-1.

Alex Nicholes of Pleasant Gove slipped past Viewmont's Mitch Rasmussen to win at 152.

Thomas Bryson of Layton earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors after pinning Parker Dawe of Pleasant Grove at 215.

Viewmont coach Brandon Ripplinger was named 5A coach of the year.
