RIVERTON – Viewmont’s McKay Butler and McKay Johnson each scored 13 points and combined to make four 3-pointers Tuesday night against Riverton.
However, it wasn’t enough to overcome a 24-point outburst by Riverton to start the second half, and ultimately the Vikings fell for the second consecutive time in preseason play, losing to the Silverwolves 64-57.
Viewmont began the night with a consistent offensive output, scoring 16 points in the first quarter and 12 more in the second to take a slim five-point halftime lead. Butler, Johnson and several others helped the Vikings keep the lead by holding Stephan Holm and Richard Worsham, Riverton’s top two scorers on Tuesday night, to single-digit scoring efforts through the first half of play.
However, Viewmont’s slim lead turned into a deficit after the third quarter when they allowed the Silverwolves to score 24 points. The outburst by Riverton allotted them a 3-point lead heading into the final quarter, which was a back-and-forth battle throughout.
While attempting to make a comeback in the fourth, Viewmont sent Riverton to the line for what amounted to 20 free-throw attempts in the game. Riverton, however, countered the strategy by making all 20 of its free throws en route to the win.
Both the Vikings and the Silverwolves were also efficient from the floor, each making 18 total field goals on the night. Riverton, however, made eight 3-pointers, compared to Viewmont’s five, and Viewmont made only 12 of 18 free-throws.
Johnson and Butler led the scoring for the Vikings with 13 points each, and Michael Steinicke and May Porter each had five points in the loss.
For Riverton, Holm scored a game-high 22 points and made four 3-pointers in the Silverwolves’ win. Worsham added nine points, and Tevita Loamanu scored six points for Riverton.
Since opening the season with three consecutive wins, Viewmont has lost its last two games by a combined 10 points. The Vikings dropped a close 53-48 game to Woods Cross last Thursday.
The Vikings’ Wednesday night game score was not available as of press time, but the Vikings will travel to Bountiful High School for a rivalry game against the Braves on Friday.
Viewmont’s next set of games will occur at the Red Rock Rumble next weekend, held at Dixie State College. While there the Vikings will face American Fork, Desert Hills and Pine View High Schools.
