Vikings place third, Braves fifth at Brawl

SMITHFIELD – Both the Viewmont Vikings and Bountiful Braves wrestling teams took the bus to Sky View High School last weekend to take part in the annual Bobcat Brawl.

Viewmont was able to finish third, and also beat the Braves in their one and only head-to-head match.

The Braves placed fifth as a team.

 

Vikings beat Braves at Bobcat Brawl, finish in third place

It was the first match of the two-day Bobcat Brawl at Sky View High School, as the Viewmont Vikings and Bountiful Braves squared off on the mat to start the tournament.

In the end, the Vikings won the match 49-21, and ended up placing third among eight teams at the tournament.

Bountiful went on to finish fifth.

The Vikings won their opening pair of matches over Bountiful and Region 1 foe Fremont before dropping a close match to Logan, 35-33.

The Vikings also lost to Salem Hills, but bounced back to beat Highland (31-30), Morgan (48-24) and host Sky View (48-12) in the final three matches.

David Kim, wrestling at 126 pounds, finished the tournament with a 6-1 record*. Peter Burgoyne also went undefeated. Trevor Porschatis finished with only one loss. 

The Braves bounced back quickly after their opening round loss to Viewmont, claiming victories over Sky View (39-27) and Morgan (46-28).

Their momentum shifted the other way, however, and the Braves lost all four of its remaining matches to place fifth overall.

The Braves’ closest match was the final one of the tournament against Fremont. The Braves lost by just two points, 41-39.

 

Davis beats Weber in Region 1 dual, 36-30

In a region match that was close only in the beginning, the Davis Darts wrestling team won their Region 1 match over Weber last Thursday, 36-30.

Trailing only 3-0 following the first match, Davis’s Christian Smith, Wyatt Koelling and Connor Taylor won the next three matches to take a 14-3 lead.

The Darts had to forfeit the 220 pound match, but won the 285 pound and 106 pound matches for a commanding lead.

Wyatt Knowlton (138 pounds) and Jeffrey McIlratch (145 pounds) closed out the match by scoring four and three points, respectively, to shut down the Warriors.

 

Upcoming matches

After facing Morgan on Wednesday, the Davis Darts will face Syracuse Thursday at Davis High School before heading to the Highland Duals on Friday and Saturday.

Viewmont will face Fremont at home Thursday before going to the Richardson Memorial tournament in Brigham City over the weekend.

Bountiful will face off against Cyprus Thursday night at Cyprus High School before heading to the Richardson Memorial as well.

Woods Cross will not have another match until Thursday, Jan. 16 against East.
