WOODS CROSS – The Viewmont Vikings and Davis Darts wrestling teams took to the mats during last week’s 5A Divisional qualifying tournaments.
Viewmont finished fifth in the Division A qualifier and will send at least nine wrestlers to the state tournament.
The Darts placed third behind Layton and Syracuse in the Division B qualifier, and will have as many as 11 grapplers in the state 5A tournament.
Vikings fifth in Division A qualifier, sends nine to state tournament
The Viewmont Vikings battled through a rough 5A Division A qualifying tournament last weekend at Jordan High School, and managed to finish fifth overall and put nine wrestlers in the state 5A tournament.
Viewmont will be sending at least nine wrestlers to the state tournament at the Maverik Center.
Among them is the only individual champion, 126-pounder David Kim.
Other representatives include Taylor Porath (106 pounds), Ryan Winger (120 pounds), Chaz Barraclough (132 pounds), Bridger Hyatt (145 pounds), Luke Gibbs (152 pounds), Alex Graham (160 pounds), Jordan Bagwell (182 pounds), and Zach DeGray (220 pounds).
Each of them finished in the top eight, qualifying them for the state tournament.
Viewmont also has three alternates who could enter the tournament. They are Shawn Evans (113 pounds), Peter Burgoyne (138 pounds) and Josh Chamberlain (195 pounds).
Davis finishes third in Divisional B qualifier
The Davis Darts placed third in the 5A Divisional B qualifying tournament at Alta High School last weekend, and will send as many as 11 wrestlers to the 5A state tournament.
The bigger news for the Darts will be 11 wrestlers who will represent Davis at the 5A tournament; however.
Among them are Kade Evans and Keith Greenman (106 pounds), Parker Edgington (120 pounds), Baylor Green (126 pounds), Wyatt Knowlton (138 pounds), Jacob Naylor and Jeff McIlrath (145 pounds), Steven Spjut (152 pounds), Christian Smith (170 pounds), Wyatt Koelling (182 pounds), and Conner Taylor (195 pounds).
Matches this week
The wrestling season wraps up this week with the state 4A and 5A wrestling tournaments, taking place at the Maverik Center starting Thursday.
The tournament concludes Saturday with championship matches.
