LAYTON — The 2013 Armed Forces Mens’ and Womens’ Beach and Indoor Volleyball Tournament will hold its championship matches on Monday, May 13 at Hill Air Force Base.

The tournament, the biggest of its kind for the Armed Forces, has seen more than 100 athletes, coaches and trainers for the right to be called a champion.

It also gives bragging rights to either the Air Force, Marines, Army or Navy for an entire year.

“This is great exposure for the entire Hill Air Force Base community, as the annual armed forces tournament captures the attention of service members all over the world,” said Col. Kraig Hanson, 75th Mission Support Group commander, in a press release.

In a first for the base, Hill was chosen to host the championship event for this year’s volleyball tournament. The base has hosted the tournament in other years, but only on a trial or qualifying basis.

Most recently, the tournament was held at Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois.

Craig Karger, Hill’s fitness center director, said the base was chosen to host this year’s tournament based on its staff facilities and success with hosting previous trial camps and qualifiers.

Following the championship tournament, the best players from each of the services will be selected to the armed forces men’s and women’s volleyball team, and will advance to represent the U.S. military at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships May 24-29 in Louisville, Kent.
