OREM – The 4A and 5A State volleyball tournament kicked off Thursday morning with Woods Cross, Bountiful and Davis high schools searching for a state title for their respective schools.
In the 4A bracket, Woods Cross, the Region 6 champion, looks to continue its long winning streak as the Wildcats look to win their first state title since 1979.
That year, the Wildcats finished the second of its back-to-back State 3A titles, but haven’t been able to capture it since.
Last season, the Wildcats won their opening match, but dropped its second match to fall to the loser’s bracket in Day 2.
They won their remaining matches against Bonneville and Skyline to finish fifth overall.
The Bountiful Braves earned their third straight trip to the State 4A tournament this season after finishing second behind Woods Cross.
Bountiful, coached by Lane Herrick, is making its sixth straight playoff appearance dating back to 2008.
In those years, the Braves have finished as high as fifth (twice), and were eliminated after the first day of play last season.
In the 5A bracket, the Davis Darts are back in the playoff bracket, but barely. Davis enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed from Region 1, making its road back to the finals a difficult one.
The Darts; however, have boasted some recent success since Lori Salvo’s return to her alma mater.
Since she has taken over the program, the Darts have placed in the top three in each of the last three years.
The Darts also have a State 5A title, which they won in 2011.
The opening round of the 4A playoffs had Woods Cross face off against Box Elder and Bountiful go up against Mountain Crest Thursday morning.
Clearfield, the No. 4 seed from Region 6, took on Sky View to open tournament play as well.
In the 5A bracket, Davis opens the afternoon series of matches against defending 5A champion Pleasant Grove.
Layton, the No. 2 seed from Region 1, will face Riverton in the opening round. Northridge is also in the 5A tournament and will face Lehi in its opening round.
Matches began as early as 9 a.m., and results will be posted on the Davis Clipper’s website as they come in.
The 4A and 5A finals will be played on Saturday.
The state tournament is being held at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center, located at 800 W. University Parkway in Orem.
