WEST BOUNTIFUL
—  There’s more to cowboy poetry than just the open range.

At the West Bountiful Arts Council’s annual free cowboy poetry event set for Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at West Bountiful City Hall, everything from life and death to the battle between the sexes is a worthy topic. Cowboy hats are welcome, but what really matters is the story.

“Cowboy poetry speaks to the heart a little more,” said Von Hill, one of the poets who will be performing at the event. “It’s not vague and abstract like other types of poetry can be.”

Other cowboy poets who will take the stage this Friday include Kim McKean and his son Chris, Ellen Kirkland and Steve Ballard. Many of the poets have performed at previous cowboy poetry events sponsored by the city.

Kirkland, who was first drawn to cowboy poetry by attending the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, will recite a poem she first heard while at the gathering. This is her second appearance at the West Bountiful cowboy poetry events.

“It’s about going shopping with a man for Christmas,” she said. “There are some really funny stories that come out of cowboy poetry.”

Hill is taking a more serious route with his choices, planning to recite one by Baxter Black that he says is about “moving on and growing old.” Whether the poem is serious or comedic, Hill likes to be careful with his pacing.

“You don’t want to rush things,” he said. “The mind paints a much more vivid picture than the eye can see. You’re trying to create a feeling.”

A folk and country group called Blue Mountain will also perform at the event. Mike Leger, a local musician and familiar face at the monthly West Bountiful concerts, will serve as emcee for the evening.

West Bountiful City Hall is located at 550 N. and 800 West. Easy-access parking is available.
