Oblivion

Rated: PG-13

Tom Cruise proves to be surprisingly less annoying than usual in this sci-fi tale of a man doing clean-up on a mostly destroyed, nearly empty Earth. When it turns out that the planet isn’t quite so empty as his superiors told him it was, he has to risk his life and possibly his future to uncover the mystery.

The movie has far more talking than action, though its thoughtful enough that it might appeal to those who prefer their sci-fi more theoretical and less shoot-em-up. Even if that’s not the case, the movie does still offer awesome planetary vistas and the joy of hearing Morgan Freeman talk about pretty much anything.

What you may have missed

Jurassic Park 3D

Rated: PG-13

If a movie’s good enough, it’ll stand up to the tests of time. Jurassic Park manages to do exactly that, with thrills, chills and special effects that hold up surprisingly well even after 20 years. If the sub-par sequels have dulled your memory of the original, now’s definitely the time to go back and get reacquainted.

The 3D upgrade (and the big screen) suits the movie perfectly, adding just a little bit more grandeur to those magnificent dinosaur migration shots. Of course, it also makes the scarier bits that much more immersive, but that’s part of the fun.

Silver Linings Playbook

Rated: R

If you still haven’t seen one of the most buzz-generating (yet still actually entertaining) movies of the year, now’s your chance. Though the first half-hour or so can be an uncomfortable but genuine look at bipolar disorder, the movie settles into an offbeat but oddly tender romance between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence’s characters. The movie earns its R rating through language and quite a bit of talk about sex.
