You may wonder where you fit on the breastfeeding team. As a grandparent, parent or friend, you can play many positions. When the whole breastfeeding team works together, mothers and babies win.
The theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Month observed in August is Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life! This acknowledges that when mothers and babies succeed in their breastfeeding plans, they can enjoy a lifetime of benefits. Breastfeeding often takes a team of more than just mother and baby. Everyone has a position to play.
You may take the role of a coach and help build a mother’s confidence, remind her of the benefits of breastfeeding or help her find the resources she needs to get accurate answers to her questions.
The defender on the team will shield a breastfeeding mother from negative comments or criticism if others question her breastfeeding goals.
Every team needs cheerleaders. Give a mother positive comments about herself, her baby and breastfeeding. Share praise of her with other family and friends.
Be the number one fan. Bring a meal, run errands or help around the house. Let the mother enjoy a “time-out” by caring for her baby or older children.
Whether you are the coach, defender, cheerleader or fan, you play an important role in the breastfeeding team.
Infant feeding is one of the most important decisions a family can make and most women have a specific goal in mind. When mothers and babies are able to reach their breastfeeding goal, they contribute to the community prosperity, health and environment and everybody wins.
