OREM – The Woods Cross Wildcats volleyball team was close to making history as it entered the State 4A volleyball tournament at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center last week.

After finishing the regular season unbeaten at 14-0, Woods Cross was one match away from finishing off the 2013 campaign with a state title and an 18-0 record.

Instead, the Lady Wildcats fell to Sky View in the semi-final match 3-1, eventually finishing in third place after taking down Mountain Crest in a three-set sweep.

However, Woods Cross began the tournament by nearly missing out on the historic run altogether. In Thursday’s opening round against Box Elder, the Wildcats battled back and forth with the Bees through the first four sets.

After dropping the fourth set to tie the match, the Wildcats were able to take the final set 15-12 to move onto the next round.

A four-set win over Salem Hills in the following match had the Wildcats up against Sky View to kick off Thursday’s action, but a four-set loss ended the winning streak and any chance of claiming the 4A State volleyball title.

Woods Cross; however, took out its aggressions on Mountain Crest in the consolation round, winning the match with a three-set sweep to claim third place overall.

Their finish was the highest for the school since the 1979 season, when the Wildcats finished the second of back-to-back 3A state titles.

Bountiful’s volleyball team, which has made an appearance in the 4A tournament every year since 2008, once again had to fight its way through the consolation bracket after the first match.

The Lady Braves fell to Mountain Crest 3-2 to open the tournament, but survived through Thursday’s action by taking down Provo in the consolation bracket.

On Saturday, a 3-1 win over Timpanogos had the Braves in the sixth-place match, where they fell to Mountain View in four sets.

Davis, which finished in the top three the last two years in the 5A playoffs, also lost in the first round but made it through Thursday’s games by taking down Granger in straight sets.

Davis lost to Lone Peak to kick off Saturday’s action, falling out of a top eight finish.

Layton High School placed fourth after dropping the third place match to fellow Region 1 member Fremont.

After winning Thursday’s opening matches 3-0 and 3-1, the Lady Lancers lost both the semi-final and third place match in straight sets.
