BOUNTIFUL - A winter storm preceded by a layer of freezing rain caused all sorts of delays and crashes along the Wasatch Front Thursday morning.

All over Davis County, a thick layer of ice covered the roads after the rain began to fall around midnight. Later in the morning, a thick, wet layer of snow blanketed the Wasatch Front, making travel even more problematic.

UDOT reported more than 38 crashes along major roads in Davis County since Wednesday evening.

Early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for most of northern Utah, effective through 8 pm.

Despite the storm, all schools within the Davis School District were open, although officials expected some delays for buses.

The storm caused a cargo plane to veer off the tarmac at Salt Lake International Airport. No one was hurt, but by 9:30 am, airport officials closed down all flight operations until conditions could improve.

Flights into SLC International were diverted to other airports in the mean time. One runway was re-opened just before noon.

Despite delays, most traffic on Interstate 15 kept moving through Davis County, with the exception of the north interchange near North Salt Lake and Woods Cross, where commuters encountered major delays.

In Salt Lake County, the 2100 South freeway was closed due to a downed power line near I-215.
