This Christmas, the hottest toys all have stories attached to them.

Stores in Davis County are reporting that the season’s most popular toys are all universe-specific, tied to popular or upcoming movies or TV shows. The latest X-box and Playstation consoles are also hot sellers, giving kids of all ages the chance to experience hundreds of game-based stories.

Lego sets

The classic brick toys have been flying off the shelves, particularly the specialty sets that recreate key sets from “Lord of the Rings,” “Star Wars” and more. Other sets are based on the animal-populated “Chima” universe, which is also currently airing on Cartoon Network.

Though Legos are perpetually popular, media tie-ins have helped the classic toys widen their reach in recent years. A series of Lego video games have boosted their popularity, including a recent one focusing on Marvel superheroes, and the multi-universe “The Lego Movie” is due to hit theaters next February.

“Frozen” tie-in toys

Disney’s latest animated offering topped the box office its second week in theaters, and the toys have proven equally popular with local girls. There are Barbie-style dolls of both the female leads, sisters Anna and Elsa, along with versions that portray them as children. In addition, there are several play sets featuring action figure-style toys, sleds, and even the ice palace from the movie. \

“Doc McStuffins” tie-in toys

For those of you who don’t have the Disney Channel or Disney Junior, “Doc McStuffins” is an animated series about a young girl who serves as a doctor/veterinarian for toys and stuffed animals. Now in its second season, the show is gaining in popularity enough that toys such as dolls and check-up play sets are showing up on a lot of kids’ Christmas lists.

Next-generation gaming consoles

The duel between PS4 and Xbox One is going on just as strongly in the county as it is the nation as a whole, with sales of both running too close to call an individual winner. The PS4 is the cheaper of the two, running $399 to the Xbox One’s $499 price tag, and many of the most popular games are expected to appear on both consoles.

Unlike previous gaming systems, neither will let you play games released for the Xbox 360, PS3, or earlier consoles. So whichever you pick, make sure to keep your old machines around.
