TAYLORSVILLE – The Woods Cross Lady Wildcats girls’ basketball team battled, scratched and clawed with top-seeded Timpview in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.
But a one point deficit quickly grew to nine points by the end of the third quarter, and Woods Cross was eventually eliminated from the playoffs after a 59-35 loss.
Woods Cross fought hard defensively in the first quarter, allowing the Thunder Birds to score only four points as the Wildcats took a slim four-point lead. Woods Cross hung onto the lead throughout most of the second quarter as well, but a late bucket by Timpview’s Lacy Haddock gave the Thunder Birds the 20-19 lead at the half.
The staunch Wildcats defense started to show a few kinks to start the third quarter, allowing Timpview to score 14 points and falling further behind to start the fourth quarter. Woods Cross was given fits by Lauryn De La Cruz, who scored 15 points through three quarters and converted several steal attempts into easy baskets on the other end.
In all, De La Cruz finished the game with 19 points and seven steals.
Timpview’s lead proved to be too big for Woods Cross, which scored only 10 points in the closing quarter.
Aubree Riddle scored a team-high 13 points with Halle Smith scored nine points in the loss.
The Wildcats finished the season with a 7-15 overall record, and was 6-8 in Region 6 play.
