The ’Cats return a solid group of wrestlers that Milligan believes can place at the 4A state tournament in February.
“At 195, we have junior Tony Mendez,” said Milligan, who enters his second year as coach of the Wildcats. “He placed third last year at region and lost in the blood round at state.
“He will anchor the team and is on track for another great year.”
Region placer Ryan Peterson (145), along with Kyle Nelson (126) and Cole Cook (145) are also expected to have big years.
“These other guys have showed a lot of promise in the past and they are ready to turn a lot of heads and place at state,” Milligan said. “Our team is full of young talent coming up from the junior highs.
“We’re very fortunate to have a great club feeding into our program at Woods Cross.”
Though the team as a whole finished with a less than stellar state placing due to the lack of wrestlers in the tournament, the Wildcats are still very goal-oriented heading into the 2011 season.
“Our goals are very simple this year, to improve everyday,” said Milligan. “We hope to have a stronger showing at region and state this year.
“But we want to keep it simple and work on the fundamentals while improving the team on a day-to-day basis.”
Milligan also sees the Woods Cross program moving in a positive direction.
“We can only go up from here,” he said. “We’re still young and growing, but we are showing a lot of promise.
“I have a great group of kids that are ready to battle.”
The Wildcats’ first tournament after Wednesday’s Turkey Dart Tournament will be on Friday, Dec. 2.
That day, the Wildcats will take part in the Roy Duals, an annual tournament held at Roy High School.
