Lady Wildcats down Cyprus 41-32 to take the final Region 6 playoff spot

Needing a win to get into the state 4A girls’ basketball playoffs, the Woods Cross Lady Wildcats fought to the final buzzer against the Cyprus Pirates last Thursday.

Even though Woods Cross was held scoreless for an entire quarter, the Lady Wildcats were still able to get the 41-32 victory over the Pirates to claim the fourth and final playoff spot from Region 6 in the 4A playoff bracket.

Both the Wildcats and Pirates played a close first half, and the Wildcats took a 22-16 lead.

Woods Cross opened the second half by not scoring a single point, but were only trailing by two points at 24-22 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, and only allowed Cyprus to score eight points, to close out the win.

Halle Smith led Woods Cross with 12 points, and Aubree Riddle scored nine points for Woods Cross.

Marissa Brunner scored seven points and had 17 rebounds for the Wildcats in the win.

Cyprus didn’t have a single player score in double figures. Kyra Alvey scored nine points to lead the Lady Pirates in the loss.

Lady Vikings down Titans 69-49 to claim final spot from Region 1

The Viewmont Vikings girls’ basketball team played a close game with Syracuse after one quarter, taking a slim one-point lead at 11-10.

After that; however, the game was dominated by the Vikings after they scored 21 points, taking a 32-17 halftime lead and eventually winning 69-49.

The second quarter outburst by the Vikings proved to be the biggest difference in the game. The Lady Vikings out-scored Syracuse in the second half, but only by five points (37-32).

It was enough to claim the fourth and final playoff spot from Region 1 in the state 5A playoffs.

Caitlyn Larsen led Viewmont by scoring 18 points with five assists and four rebounds. Collette West scored 15 points and Katie Toole scored 14 points with six rebounds for the Vikings.
