SALT LAKE CITY — Artwork created by Latter-day Saint youth from around the world is featured in a new exhibit, “Arise and Shine Forth” at the Church History Museum through June 17, 2013. A three-member adult jury and a six-member youth jury selected 82 pieces for the exhibition from more than 400 entries received last June. The exhibit features a variety of visual art mediums including paintings, sculptures, textiles, photographs and ceramics. The theme of the exhibit carries an invitation from the Lord to church members to “arise and shine forth” so that their “light may be a standard for the nations” (Doctrine and Covenants 115:4-6), according to a press release. The young artists featured in the exhibit profile a promising outlook for Latter-day Saint art, said Museum Director Kurt Graham. “Anyone wondering about the future of LDS art needs to see this show exhibit,” Graham said. “The caliber of the work makes it clear the field is in good hands. The talents of these young artists will prove to be a great blessing to the church and its members. The majority of the work came from artists in the United States, but it also includes works from Brazil, the Philippines, Canada, Taiwan, Austria, Japan, Mexico and several other countries. The artwork is a testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the gospel principles shared by young church members through artistic expression, said exhibit curator Rita Wright. “We have been very impressed with the technical skills and thoughtfulness of the entries,” she said. “The artwork significantly portrays ways that youth in the church can allow their testimonies to shine forth. We are grateful for the willingness of the artists to share their feelings through their artwork and applaud their talents.” Museum visitors may vote for their favorite works in the galleries and online through the museum’s website and Facebook page. The top choices will receive Visitor’s Choice Awards at the end of the exhibit.
