Holy Week services offered across county

by Jenniffer WARDELL

Holy Week is almost upon us.

Both the Catholic and Lutheran faiths regularly celebrate Holy Week as a lead-up to Easter, giving members another way to honor and reflect on the events immediately preceding Christ’s crucifixion. Palm Sunday honors Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, Maundy Thursday (or Holy Thursday) commemorates the Last Supper, Good Friday commemorates his crucifixion and subsequent death, while Holy Saturday marks his burial in the tomb.

Several Davis County churches have Holy Week services scheduled, with all events open to anyone interested in participating. St. Olaf Catholic Church will start their week of services with a Palm Sunday vigil at 5:30 p.m., which will also include the blessing of palms outside the church. On Palm Sunday, mass will be held at 9 a.m. at 11:30 a.m. Both will include a blessing of palms, with the 9 a.m. blessing held outside the church and the 11:30 a.m. blessing in the McNamara Center. The second blessing will be followed by a procession into the church.

March 26-28, the church will hold confessions from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. mass. On March 29, the church will hold the Mass of the Celebration of the Last Supper at 7 p.m., which will include the Rite of the Washing of the Feet. On Good Friday, March 30, live Stations of the Cross will be held outside, weather permitting, starting at noon (if not, they’ll be held inside the church). At 3 p.m. will be the Liturgy of the Passion, Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church will hold their Palm Sunday vigil mass on March 24 at 5 p.m., with their Palm Sunday masses at 8 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. (for English speakers), 1 p.m. (for Spanish speakers), and at 6 p.m. (their Lifeteen mass). The church will not hold confessions March 26-28.

Holy Week services start again on March 29, when the church will hold the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m. Stations of the Cross will be held twice on Good Friday, at noon (for English speakers) and 1:30 p.m. (for Spanish speakers). Later that same day, the Divine Liturgy will be held at 5 p.m. for Spanish speakers and 7:30 p.m. for English speakers. On Holy Saturday, there will be an Easter vigil at 8:30 a.m. There will be no 5 p.m. mass. The church is located at 210 Chapel Street in Layton.
