My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale at Hale

It’s the story of the wooden boy Pinocchio like never before. Hale Centre Theatre presents Disney’s My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale, set to run through  Sept. 8 on the Sorenson Legacy Jewel Box Stage in the Mountain America Performing Arts Centre in Sandy. Hale Centre Theatre has lowered the minimum age from five to three years old for this special family production that features the famous songs I’ve Got No Strings, When You Wish Upon a Star and additional music from Wicked composer, Stephen Schwartz. Tickets for the timeless tale are on sale now.

“Pinocchio is a family musical that tells the story of a father and son learning to accept each other, flaws and all,” said Sally Dietlein, HCT vice president and executive producer. “And Hale Centre Theatre has a few tricks up its sleeve with eye-popping set pieces and stage props. We even brought in a designer specifically for Pinocchio’s nose and the result is spectacular. I cannot tell a lie!”

My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale is a new musical based on Disney’s 2000 made-for-television movie Geppetto. Like the movie, the story is told from Geppetto’s perspective and uses the book by David Stern and music by Stephen Schwartz. Years later, Stern and Schwartz transformed the movie into a stage musical adaptation that premiered in 2006 at The Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri under its original name, Disney’s Geppetto & Son. The name was later changed to My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale and has become a family favorite for children to act in and attend.

In this classic story, Geppetto the wood carver, creates a wooden puppet he names Pinocchio. After Geppetto wishes upon a star that Pinocchio would become a real living, breathing boy, the dazzling Blue Fairy grants his wish. But parenthood is not as easy as Geppetto dreamed it to be. Pinocchio struggles to live up to being “the perfect son” and runs away, leaving Geppetto heartbroken and searching to find him. When faced with the possibility of never seeing Pinocchio again, thanks to the evil Stromboli, Geppetto learns what it means to love his child unconditionally.

“Pinocchio is written to entertain children, but there are very beautiful, smart and profound truths that are layered into the story,” said Dave Tinney, producer of My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale. “There are 18 kids performing in the show between the two casts, ranging from eight to 12 years old, and they are as professional as the adults. The difference between the two seems to only be age and sometimes, stature. Our child actors haven’t lost their belief in the magic of pretending and are truly little pros! It’s a delight to see such a young cast put on such an admirable show.”

Hale Centre Theatre’s My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale is cast with local actors Mark Pulham as Geppetto; Toby Worland and Coleman Higbee double cast as Pinocchio; and Raina Thorne as the Blue Fairy.
