Davis picked up two key region wins last week, while Viewmont and Woods Cross each won a region matchup. Bountiful is still looking for its first region victory through four games.
The second half made the difference in both Davis wins over Weber and Clearfield.
Against Weber Jan. 23, the Darts bounced back from a 10-2 deficit after the first quarter to a one-point lead at the half. A 38-point second half effort secured Davis’ second region win.
“It was a great game and this win was so needed, not only to put us in a position to keep fighting to get a spot to go to state but for us emotionally,” head coach Anne Jones said. “We have had a lot of close games lately so this just boosts our confidence going forward. Everyone played well and it really was a ‘team’ win.”
Teuila Alofipo led the scoring with 14 points, while Sydni Oviatt had a double-double game with 13 points and 12 rebounds. On Jan. 26, the Darts picked up its third region victory with a 48-42 win over Clearfield. Davis was down 10-7 after the first quarter and by 10 points at halftime. The Darts scored 31 points in the second half – while Clearfield scored 15 points – to comeback for the win.
Lindsey Reich led in scoring with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, while Oviatt added 11 points. Davis is now 3-5 in Region 1 play with a 9-8 overall record.
Bountiful lost 54-26 to Roy Jan. 24. The Braves got off to a slow start, scoring just three points in the first quarter – while Roy had 17 – and were down 29-13 at the half. Bountiful outscored Roy in the third quarter 10-8, but finished the game scoring just three points – while Roy scored 17 – in the final eight minutes.
On Jan. 26, the Braves lost to Woods Cross 64-34, hanging close for the first quarter, but were down 38-17 by the break. Bountiful managed just 17 points in the second half in the 30-point loss.
“The girls are playing hard and improving,” head coach Joel Burton said. “We did have a lot of girls score.”
Bountiful is 0-4 in region with a 2-14 record so far this season.
Viewmont won its 13th game in a row, scoring in double figures in each quarter, with a 53-46 victory over Woods Cross Jan. 24.
The Vikings were led by Mercedes Staples with 21 points while six others scored – Kenna Morris (nine points), Anna MacKay (six), Hannah Simonsen (five), Melissa Sorenson (five), Karli Gunnell (four) and Emma Carr (three). Viewmont is 3-0 in league and 13-1 overall.
Woods Cross lost to Viewmont 53-46 Jan. 24, scoring just five points in the second quarter to turn a two-point deficit into eight points at halftime. Despite a 30-point second half effort, the Wildcats’ comeback fell just short.
Olivia Barton led Woods Cross in scoring with 23 points, while Mele Tauataina added 10 points.
On Jan. 26, the Wildcats put together two huge offensive halves for a 64-34 win over Bountiful, led by three players in double figures. Barton had 15 points while Allee McKenna and Sara Noel each had 12 points.
Woods Cross is in third place in Region 5 with a 3-2 record and 12-6 overall.
