Davis and Bountiful girls golf teams are gearing up for postseason play

The Davis High girls golf team has won its last four region tournaments this season by an average of more than 26 strokes behind four first-place finishes by sophomore Caylyn Ponich. Freshman Vanna Einerson has led Bountiful to four dominating wins as a team with four first-place finishes individually.

Davis

At Sun Hills Golf Course on March 29, Caylyn Ponich finished in first place and led the Darts to a 12-stroke win over Northridge.

Kaelyn Day placed third with Brooklyn Halliday (fourth) and Victoria Castro (seventh) also finishing in the top 10. Aubree Johnson (12th) and Kylie Nielsen (tied for 13th) rounded out the scoring for Davis.

On April 12 at The Bear, Ponich placed first, Day third, Halliday fifth and Castro seventh with Aubree Johnson (14th) and Kylie Nielsen (tied for 15th) also helping Davis to a first place win by 21 strokes.

At Glen Eagle on April 17, Davis shot a 311 to Northridge’s 336 behind Ponich’s first place finish. Halliday (third), Day (fifth), Castro (sixth), Nielsen (13th), Johnson (16th), Ashley Nokes (18th) and Sophie Henderson (18th).

Ponich’s first-place showing at Davis Park on April 26 led Davis to a 319 score over Northridge’s 363. Halliday came in third, Day fourth and Victoria Castro fifth to nearly sweep the top five spots.       “Our team is playing awesome,” head coach Lori Salvo said.

The 6A state championships are scheduled for May 14-15 at Meadowbrook.

Bountiful

Senior Megan Van Leeuwen and freshman Vanna Einerson shot 79s to lead the Braves to a first place showing at Schneiters Bluff Golf Course on March 27. Jobi Einerson, playing with a sore neck, came in second with an 80. Liz Ward shot an 85 and Sadee Pack a 93.

At Lakeside on April 10, Vanna Einerson won her first high school tournament with a 71 while Jobi Einerson shot a 73. Ward (78) and Van Leeuwen (91) also helped Bountiful place first.

“Our team is playing well,” head coach Jenny Hathaway said. “It was fun for Vanna to get her first victory.”

A rescheduled match at Englewood finally happened on April 25 with Bountiful placing first with a score of 323 over Box Elder, who was second with a 399.

Vanna Einerson shot a 76, two shots better than older sister Jobi ,while Ward (81) and Van Leeuwen (88) also helped the Braves continue an undefeated region tournament streak.

The Region 5 tournament is at at Schneiter’s Bluff. The 5A tournament is scheduled for May 14-15 at Glenmoor.
