KAYSVILLE–The Davis High softball team played six games in its first week to the 2018 season, going 2-3-1, with five of those games being decided by one-run.
“I am happy with the progress we are making,” head coach Mylei Zachman said. “We have had a chance in every game.”
In its first matchup, Davis lost to Bingham 6-5 on March 6. The Darts were up 2-1 through three innings, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the fourth and scored three runs in the finals two innings to come up just short
Sophomore Lexi Sunderland had two hits and two RBIs while senior Whitney Crowley also hit twice while driving in a run.
At the March Warm-Up Elite Tournament in St. George over the weekend, Davis started with a 5-5 tie with Springville on March 9. The Darts were down 1-0 until they tied it up in the bottom of the third at 1-all and then again at 2-2 all in the bottom of the fourth. A three-run fifth inning gave Davis the lead heading into the final two innings before Springville evened the score in the seventh for the tie game. Crowley, junior Sidney Eyre and junior Paige Elkins had multiple-hit games with Elkins driving in two runs.
Davis got its first win of the season with an 8-7 victory over Cedar on March 9. The Darts battled back from a 4-0 deficit with eight runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to come out on top. Crowley had two hits and three RBIs while Eyre drove in two runs on one hit. Sunderland got the win on the mound while sophomore pitcher Kya Wilmott picked up the save.
Davis lost 4-3 to Lake City, Idaho on March. 9. Cullimore belted a three-run homer to give the Darts the lead through the first three innings before giving up two late runs in the loss.
Against Union on March 10, Davis picked up its second win of the year 11-1, jumping on Union early with eleven runs through the first three innings to cruise to the 10-run win. Senior Laura Baird and junior Maggie Miller had two hits while Cullimore hit another three-run homerun. Wilmott pitched the Darts to the win.
To close out the tournament, Davis lost 7-6 to Stansbury on March 10, scoring early and holding a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. But, the Darts surrendered seven runs over the final three innings in the loss. Baird had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs in the game.
“Whitney Crowley has done a great job being a spark for us offensively,” Zachman said. “All of our pitchers have done a nice job giving us a chance to win. Paige Elkins and Carley Croshaw have also had nice starts to the season and have been very good defensively. We will keep working to get a little better each time.”
