Play heating up for local softball teams

Bountiful picked up three key region wins while Davis had two one-run losses last week but bounced back for a big 12-1 victory over Northridge. Viewmont and Woods Cross both lost its two games last week.


Davis lost to Layton 5-4 on April 18. Davis scored a run early until Layton tied things up at the end of five. In extra innings, Davis scored three more runs in the eighth before the Lancers matched that with three runs. In the bottom of the ninth, Layton scored the winning run.

“Layton did a really good job of taking advantage of our mistakes,” head coach Mylei Zachman said. “Hopefully we learn from the game and get better.”

On April 19, Davis lost to Fremont 6-5. The

Darts found itself down 4-1 early and then 6-1 in the fifth inning. Davis rebounded with a 12-1 win over Northridge, scoring its runs through the first four innings of the game. The Darts led 10-0 before Northridge scored to avoid the shutout.

“Kya Wilmott pitched well for us,” Zachman said. “Mia Cullimore had a good day at the plate with a double and homerun. Overall, it was a good team effort.”

The Darts are now 10-5-1 on the year.


Bountiful defeated Payson 8-4 April 16, winning their sixth game in a row. The Braves were down 1-0 in the top of the third inning before scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning and maintaining control of the game from there.

McHailee Danner picked up the win on the mound and helped herself at the plate with a double as well. Livi Arona had two of the team’s nine hits in a 2-for-2 performance with an RBI and scored run.

Head coach Butch Latey credited his defense for putting away two double plays and a pick-off at third base. “Annie Salazar also came in relief and threw three outstanding innings,” he said.

On April 17, Bountiful beat Viewmont 15-0, jumping out to a big lead early and scoring all of its runs through the first three innings.

Libbie Hawker went two-for-three at the plate and McHailee Danner belted a 3-run homer in the third inning in the win. Corinne Hall picked up the win on the mound, recording three strike outs.

On April 19, the game was scoreless through three innings before the Braves’ Sophie Stoddard hit an RBI single in the fourth inning. Alyssa Bowles added a solo homerun in the seventh inning.

Bountiful has an 11-2 record and stands in first place in Region 5.


Viewmont lost its ninth straight game with a 15-0 loss to Bountiful April 17.

Against Roy April 19, Viewmont lost 9-6. The Vikings were down 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning but came back with three runs to take the lead. The game went back-and-forth until extra innings when Roy scored three innings for the winning margin.

Viewmont’s record is 1-12 this season.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross lost to Logan 8-6 April 16.

“We came out strong scoring four runs in the first inning,” head coach Casey Plowman said.

Logan scored its runs in the final innings for the comeback.

Against Box Elder April 17, the Wildcats lost 11-0. Woods Cross was down 5-0 early and couldn’t get going offensively in the loss.

Woods Cross is 3-7 this season.
