Softball teams warming up in region play

By Catherine Garrett Clipper sportswriter Davis, Bountiful and Woods Cross picked up softball wins last week, while Viewmont still looks for its first victory of the season through seven games. Davis Davis defeated Northridge 15-1 on March 20, scoring in every inning – including seven in the third inning to break open a 2-1 game. Sophomore Kya Wilmott, junior Sidney Eyre and junior Maggie Miller each had three RBIs. Wilmott picked up the win on the mound for the Darts. “Kya and Lexi [Sunderland] pitched well,” head coach Mylei Zachman said. “Maggie Miller had a great day at the plate.” On March 21, the Darts defeated Stansbury 8-2. Davis was down 1-0 early and again 2-1 before taking a 3-2 lead at the end of the third inning. A five-run sixth inning sealed the deal for Davis. “Mia Cullimore pitched a great game,” Zachman said. “Paige Elkins had a home run and Laura Baird had a double to give us the lead for good.” Davis is now 5-3-1 on the year. Bountiful Bountiful lost 2-1 to Roy on March 20. The Braves had a 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning when they surrendered two runs in the loss. “We outhit them 8 to 5, but couldn’t get a hit when we needed it,” head coach Butch Latey said. “The game ended on a play at the plate which the umpire wasn’t sure what he was going to call. He called our runner out and that ended the game.” Ashley McPhearson went 3-for-4 from the plate to lead Bountiful offensively. Latey credited Roy’s Mesa Averd on pitching an “outstanding game.” Against Viewmont on March 21, the Braves and the Vikings were scoreless through two innings before Bountiful scored 15 runs in the next two innings for a 15-1 win. Sophomore Dashani Purcell had one hit in the game – a grand slam – while sophomore Sophie Stoddard drove in three runs on two hits. Senior pitcher McHailee Danner picked up the win. Bountiful is 4-2 so far this season. Viewmont Viewmont lost to Woods Cross 11-9 on March 20. The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead early before giving up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Viewmont tied the score up at 3-3 before Woods Cross scored seven more runs. The Vikings’ six runs in the last three innings came up just short. On March 21, Viewmont lost to Bountiful 15-2, making its season record 0-7. Woods Cross Woods Cross defeated Viewmont 11-9 on March 20, putting together a few big innings – in the second, fourth and fifth – to produce 10 of its 11 runs. “It was a good game,” head coach Casey Plowman said. “Viewmont held us tight for the first couple of innings. They played solid defense which didn’t allow us to score.” A “huge clutch hit” by freshman Autumn Johnson with the bases loaded scored three runs with Johnson standing on second for a double. She recorded five RBIs. Junior Julana Te’o hit a timely double as well. Freshman Jade Valdez was the winning pitcher, going six full innings. “Pitching was amazing for us,” Plowman said. “It was a great team effort win all the way around.” Woods Cross is now 2-1 this season.
