Suspect in kidnapping ordered to stand trial

FARMINGTON—Two men accused of attempting to rob and kidnap another man while selling a cellphone that led to a standoff with SWAT, have been charged in the case.

Mitchell Whitter Tarbox, 29, of Kaysville was charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery and theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Hayden Romelo Woods, 20, of Clearfield is charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and possession of a weapon by a restricted person.

According to police, Tarbox arranged to sell a cellphone to a man in the parking lot of a Layton restaurant Jan. 9. However, when the victim got into Tarbox’s car, he allegedly locked the doors and tried to rob him. The victim was able to break a window and escape. The two suspects fled to a nearby apartment complex where Woods barricaded himself after the SWAT team arrived. The standoff ended several hours later with no injuries.

During a court appearance last week, Tarbox waived his preliminary hearing. He was scheduled for arraignment Feb. 5.
