CARLOS TURNER, in top position, captured the 285 pound title during the Viewmont Invitational last weekend.
A relatively unknown wrestler, seeded just fifth in the tournament, had made his way to the finals and after he grabbed his 5-2 victory of Mountain Crest’s Jordan Shaw, Turner had proved to be a new force at the 285 pound weight class in Utah.
“I am happy with the win for sure,” Turner said. “This is a big, good tournament so it’s a good win.
“I want to first say I have the best coach in the state with John Fager. He is amazing. I couldn’t have done this without what he has done for me. He and the other coaches and my teammates, they are all awesome.”
After a tough sophomore year Turner made it his business to become a better wrestler. He committed to a year of hard work that included attending club training and hitting the road with his teammates to go to tournaments.
“I worked real hard in the off season and I really want to become a better wrestler,” Turner said. “So I just kept working at it.”
And this season, having the likes of Derek Thomas, his coach and assistant coach Noah Fager and many others made live wrestling sessions in practice as difficult as any match he would face. The improvement of his 285 pounder hasn’t been lost on Fager.
“Last year in the room he would get pounded on,” he said. “He did a great job at the Layton tournament and has been working extremely hard. He gets to workout with some tough wrestlers every day in practice and that is a big help.”
Fager said Turner has high goals, one is to be the state champion. In his way, however is the favorite from Bingham High.
“The Bingham guy is the one to beat for sure,” Fager said. “But if Carlos keeps working hard anything can happen.”
The same approach Turner is taking.
“I am excited to keep going on this season and working and see where things go. I know with my coach and my teammates I can continue to have a great year.”
