Moving into the bottom of the second the Wildcats were able to get a few bunts by Holden Critchley and Jordan Devereaux. Followed by a wild pitch the 'Cats were on the board first with a sacrifice RBI by Brettan Mooseman to give the early 1-0 lead. The Wildcats scored again on three hits in the inning.
In the top of the third Chadwick, still on the hill, got a strikeout after giving up three hits to begin the inning, but then got rocked. Giving up a total of seven hits, Cyprus scored five runs in the third.
Trailing 5-2 in the third the 'Cats continued to struggle with Danny Burt striking out along with Cody Gillette and Tanner Chadwick grounding out to end the inning. The bleeding continued into the fourth and fifth with Dystyn Ellsworth getting the worst of it as he gave up two singles, threw a wild pitch, and allowed six runs.
Last chance for the 'Cats in the bottom of the fifth saw two singles by Matt Maestas and Danny Burt, to no avail, however. Woods Cross couldn't put anyone else aboard and Chadwick struck out to end the inning. The game ended early with the score 11-2 in favor of Cyprus because of the mercy rule.
Assistant coach Kevin Critchley said, "We're learning and they're real young, it's just part of the game. You play summer ball to learn so that way you know the skills for high school. There are a lot of games to learn. You can be the teeniest guy on the field and still be good because you know what to do and where to go. It becomes a mind game. You can't play the game unless you know the game."
So with plenty of ball left in the summer league there is still a lot of time to learn and to get better heading into the home stretch of summer.
