Man waives preliminary hearing

FARMINGTON -- The preliminary hearing for the Murray man charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse of a child and kidnapping was waived last week in 2nd District Court.
Brandon Jay Olsen, 31, was arrested in February after he allegedly used the Internet to meet two West Bountiful teens, setting up meetings with them last October, in which he exposed himself and fondled both girls. He was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, two counts of child kidnapping, sexual exploitation of a minor and dealing harmful materials to a minor. If convicted on any of the first four counts, Olsen could be sentenced to up to life in prison.

Island to host race, star party

ANTELOPE ISLAND -- For the first time ever, Antelope Island will host National Cycling Race activities Thursday, Aug. 12 and Aug. 19.
Assistant Park Manager Chris Haller says time trials competition will take place among different age groups. The East Side road will be closed both days for race participant use, as will the Fielding Garr Ranch House. Because of that, the entrance fee will be halved to $4.
A Star Party will be held Friday, Aug. 13, at 9:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center. A brief talk will be followed by a slide show presentation. Telescopes purchased by Friends of the Island will be used for viewing of star constellations. Visitors will learn how constellations were full of stories and moral warnings for American Indian children.
On Saturday, Aug. 14, the National Bison Association Tour will continue at the ranch, beginning at 10 a.m., with pioneer re-enactments taking place. Visitors can also listen to a band.

No-bail warrant issued in case

FARMINGTON -- The man accused of making threats against President Bush last year, now has a no-bail warrant issued for his arrest on sexual exploitation charges.
Kent Christopher Watson, 33, Clearfield, failed to appear in 2nd District Court last week on 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, prompting the no-bail warrant.
Watson was investigated last year by the FBI for making threats against the president. No charges were filed in the threat. However, when agents searched his computer, they found "a number of images" of child pornography, according to Paul Amann, state assistant attorney and special U.S. attorney. Agents also seized 35 guns in the search.
He explained that state law allows prosecutors to file one count for every image found, but prosecutors usually file a count for a grouping of images. He could not say how many images were found.
If convicted, Watson could serve up to 15 years in the UtahState Prison on each count.
The child pornography case was originally filed through the Davis County Attorney's Office, but eventually reached the Utah Attorney General's Office.
