Garn to view new dialysis format

WEST BOUNTIFUL -- Former Senator Jake Garn is expected to be on hand Friday, Dec. 3, to witness first hand demonstrations of the new dialysis technique at West Bountiful Dialysis, 724 W. 500 South, Suite 300.

Garn's visit is set for 10 a.m. to noon to see the "home hemo dialysis" technique in operation.

Although it has been used elsewhere, the process is relatively new to south Davis County. West Bountiful Dialysis has been offering it for just the past couple of months.

According to Stella Wilson, a social worker at the facility, the program offers patients an alternative to traditional treatments. The patient can take care of his or her own dialysis needs at home, using either a night-time or short daily mode.

"We provide the dialysis machine and the training in how to do the procedure," Wilson explained.

Garn, well known for his decision to donate one of his own kidneys to an ailing daughter, has been a strong supporter of home dialysis.
