WOODS CROSS -- Residents are being invited to attend an open house on curbside recycling on Aug. 21 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at city hall, 1555 S. 800 West.
City officials are looking at instituting a recycling plan in which each household would receive a 96-gallon rollout recycling container at an estimated cost of $3.35 per month. Residents could request additional recycling containers at no charge.
Residents would be allowed to mix recyclable paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, tin and other recyclables in the same container.
Council members, city staff and representatives of Wasatch Integrated Waste and Waste Management will be available to answer questions.
At Tuesday's council meeting, results of an informal poll conducted among Wood Cross residents were shared, showing 303 people saying they would like a recycling program, and 39 opposing the plan.
Currently, about 50 percent of garbage generated in Woods Cross is burned and recovered as energy in the form of heat used to generate steam, a portion of which is sold to Hill Air Force Base.

Motions filed in Strom murder case
FARMINGTON -- Edward Owens's attorney has filed a motion asking that evidence found at the scene of the 1980 murder of Karin Strom in Woods Cross be kept from the jury.
Michael Studebaker filed motions in 2nd District Court which focus on Strom's husband, Steven, who was initially accused of the murder. The case against him was dropped in 1981 for lack of evidence.
In May, Studebaker said he received information that Steven Strom planted evidence at the scene. At the time, he wouldn't comment on what that information was, but did say it brings "all the evidence in the case into serious doubt."
Owens was charged in March with Karin Strom's death after DNA samples taken from Owens matched DNA taken from under Karin Strom's nails.
