KAYSVILLE -- A 23-year-old Centerville man has been chosen as the new manager of Davis Cable Channel 17.

Michael Johnson was selected by an executive search committee and will start his new job Monday at the chamber offices in Kaysville.

"As a chamber, we're excited to welcome Michael to the family of chamber projects," said Vaughn Jacobsen, chamber president.

"He brings a wealth of experience and excitement, even though he's still a young man," Jacobsen said. "We look forward to leveraging those traits on behalf of Channel 17."

"He has a real strong link with Davis County," said John Pitt, chamber CEO. "He worked with the Davis Reads program, including the link with Channel 17."

That has also meant working closely with the Davis School District and Davis Education Foundation, including involvement with fund raising and sponsorship through the foundation, Pitt said.

"His vision of Channel 17 was absolutely step by step with where we're hoping to go," said Pitt. "He's got the technical knowledge to take us to the next level.

"In addition to dramatically increasing the size and scope of programming, he also wants to work toward having podcasting and video-on-demand options through our Web site," he said.

That would mean, for example, that next year, when school teachers wanted to enhance their spelling units, they could pull up the Davis County Clipper/PTA County Spelling Bee, Pitt said.

"We look to him to use his network connections throughout the county to identify needs, create the programs to meet those needs, then find promotional avenues and networking connections to find the viewership, and get it out there," he said.

"One of his key functions will be to identify sponsorship for programs," Pitt said.

Johnson has a degree in political science and business from the University of Utah, and has been working in marketing.

The non-profit station is operated by the Davis Chamber of Commerce, with support from Davis County and a majority of its communities.
