BOUNTIFUL -- Longtime Utah homeless advocate Pamela Atkinson will keynote the annual women's conference of the Bountiful Utah East Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Theme of the conference, scheduled Jan. 29, beginning at 9 a.m., is "Yield Your Heart." Susan Robison, second counselor in the stake's Relief Society presidency, said the event is meant to make women in the stake more aware of what needs there are in the community. Some 250 women are expected to attend. Participants are being asked to being an item for the Bountiful Community Food Pantry.

Atkinson, a former vice president for Mission Services at Intermountain Health Care, who serves on the state's Homeless Coordinating Committee, is known along the Wasatch Front for her advocacy for low-income and homeless individuals.

Last spring, she spoke at Woods Cross High during the Uniting Neighbors Celebration on serving the poor.

Robison attended the celebration and heard Atkinson's address. "What so impressed me was when she said that King Benjamin (a benevolent Book of Mormon monarch) and she think a lot alike." Robison said it was then she decided she wanted Atkinson to speak at the conference.

Atkinson who has spoken at other Relief Society events, often shares how giving even a little bit can make an enormous difference in the lives of others. She encourages people to help as they can, even if it's just a can of soup for the food bank, purchased with the weekly groceries.

In addition to Atkinson's address, the women will be able to view displays from such service organizations as the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which provides temporary housing for homeless families, Catholic Community Services, 211, the Bountiful Community Food Pantry, the Literacy Action Center, the Junior League, the Family Connection Center, Primary Children's Medical Center and the LDS Humanitarian Center, with ideas on how the women can become involved in helping the community.

Conference participants will spend most of the morning working on a variety of projects, such as working on quilts for the needy, hygiene kits, play blocks and puppets for the Humanitarian Center.

A light lunch will be served, with each ward providing soup, with the stake providing breadsticks and dessert.

"The event is meant to inspire the women to get out and about and find out what needs to be done in their home, ward and community," Robison said.
