At Tuesday's city council meeting an agreement with the Utah Department of Trans-portation (UDOT) to rectify the unsightly condition was proposed. The plan still needs to be approved by UDOT before any action will be taken but city officials said they hope to have a firm proposal agreed upon by May 7, when a major community-wide cleanup day is planned.
That's part of a city "action plan" to beautify the area.
The first step is to make improvements to the Frontage Road right-of-way area, just east of the freeway. City crews will remove the chain link fence between the road and the sound wall. By removing the fence city public works employees would be able to cut the weeds and maintain the area adjacent to the sound wall on a periodic basis.
The area would also be cleared for debris and litter to be picked up from the road to the sound wall.
However, in order to remove the fence, Centerville needs permission from UDOT. City officials hope to have the agreement in place before May 7 when volunteers will help remove the fence and pick up litter and other debris.
The city's long-term goal is to landscape that right-of-way and construct a bicycle path. These latter improvements, however, are subject to further approval from UDOT after those plans are developed.
During the meeting Mayor Michael Deamer made a few adjustments to the proposal. Deamer wanted to ensure that the city wasn't obligated to spend more than $1,000 on the fence. He also wanted it written in the agreement that Centerville City could terminate the agreement with a 30- day written notice.
The city will construct four fence sections using existing mesh and barbed wire to tie in to the soundwall.
The sections will be constructed in accordance with UDOT's standard chain link fence, including a new corner brace and terminal brace at each location. For maintenance mobility, the fence sections will be constructed on an angle. There will be no more than a two-inch gap between the terminal brace posts and the noise wall.
The city will coordinate the removal of the fence with UDOT's Centerville Mainten-ance Shed staff. Any materials that are deemed salvageable by UDOT will be rolled and/or stacked, and delivered to the Centerville Maintenance Shed.
