FARMINGTON -- If it's mid-August it must be Fair time in Davis County.
This year is no exception, as the annual event, which runs through Saturday, features everything from a chance to see "Finding Nemo" for free to stuffing your face with ice cream for a nominal fee.
That's not to mention the traditional rodeo, a demolition derby, kids' pet show, free concerts, pony rides, and the very popular carnival, plus a baby contest.
Then there's the wide variety of agricultural, home arts and community exhibits, plus more. All of this is happening at the Davis County FairPark, 151 S. 1100 W. in Farmington.
The Comcast Free Family Movie features the popular Disney classic Thurs., Aug. 19 at 9 p.m., on a giant screen east of the concert stage. Geared to families, they're urged to bring a blanket to lay on.
That same night, Thursday, ice cream lovers are invited to converge on the big Meadow Gold Tent at the Corporate Party Tent. Price is $2 for adults 13 and up, and $1 for kids.
The PRCA(Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Rodeo is Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. in the Legacy Center indoor arena. Tickets are $5 for seniors, aged 65 and up, $8 for adults, $3 for youth 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under. Tickets may be purchased at the FairPark, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; at The American Cowboy, 1450 W. 400 N., Bountiful; or at the gate. The rodeo is sponsored by Layton Hills Dodge.
"We've put in new (cooler) pumps and pads," said Dave Hansen, recalling that last year's rodeo was a bit on the warm side due to cooler problems. "It feels a whole lot better."
The opening night Les Schwab Tire Center Demolition Derby will be staged Wed., Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for ages 13 and up, $3 for youth 12 and under, $5 for seniors aged 65 and older, or free for kids under age 4. They can be purchased at the gate.
The free pet show is Thursday, Aug. 19, 4 p.m. on the main stage. Ribbons will be awarded for all contestants, wit prizes for winners in each category. Bring twin pets, dress them alike, like their owner, etc. Exotic animals, farm animals, favorite pets are all welcome.
Four free concerts/shows are planned:Peter Brienhort performs Wednesday, Aug. 18, Imagine Thursday, Aug. 19, Voice Male Friday, Aug. 20, and Gianni &Chazz master magicians, Saturday, Aug. 21, all at 7 p.m. Concerts are on the Lakeview Hospital concert stage.
Free pony rides start Wednesday, Aug. 18 at noon, ending each night at 10 p.m. and starting at 10 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. There is a break 3:30-4:30 p.m.
The Fun Time Carnival Co. is staging that ever-popular mainstay, noon-10 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18-Saturday, Aug. 21. Pre-purchase wristbands are $10, good Thursday and Friday only, available at the FairPark, or $12 at the fair. All rides are $1 each all day Wednesday.
Davis Hospital &Medical Center's Baby Contest is Friday, Aug. 20. The 3-5 year-olds compete at 10 a.m., 1 and 2-year-olds at 11 a.m. and 6 months-a year at noon. Registration has ended. A baby derby will follow the baby contest, and contestants must crawl from start to finish.
"There's a ton of stuff to do,"Hansen said, inviting residents to the fair. "Most of it doesn't cost anything. Every year we try to add new things, keep the best things that people have found really popular before, try to add to that."
The FairPark always gets a sprucing up, is a sort of deadline for painting and other projects, Hansen said.
