BOUNTIFUL -- Solid team play will be the key for the Lady Braves varsity basketball team's success this season. That is exactly what the team gave Coach Kelly Anderson last Friday against Juan Diego. Unfortunately that team effort still wasn't quite enough to overcome Juan Diego's hot fourth-quarter shooting. Coach Anderson was thrilled with his team's effort, if not the results.

"It was a great team effort. We played hard but we just didn't have our shots fall. It was our first game of the season, Juan Diego was playing their third. For a lot of our girls it was their first varsity experience," said Coach Anderson.

The Lady Braves were led in scoring by Rebecca Schmidt, whose 12 points, including two threes in the fourth helped keep Bountiful in the game. She wasn't alone, nearly all the Braves starters scored, helping provide balance on offense and preventing the Juan Diego defense from keying on one player.

Bountiful got off to a slow start, only scoring seven points in the first quarter and trailed 10-7 heading into the second quarter. The Braves warmed up in the second half to score 12 points and take a 19-18 lead into halftime.

The game stayed tight throughout the second half, with neither team able to pull away. Juan Diego's press defense gave the Braves some trouble and created several fast break lay ups. A terrific baseline jumper by Juan Diego's Jessica Smith gave Juan Diego a 29-25 lead late in the third. Bountiful's Erin Wall quickly answered with an impressive drive and reverse lay up to cut Juan Diego's lead to two.

Rebounds and inside shots were difficult for Bountiful thanks to Juan Diego's Sarah Lidmar. At six-foot-one her long limbs and athleticism caused problems for any Brave trying to grab a rebound or score inside.

"Sarah is the key to our success. She created a lot of problems for Bountiful with her rebounding," said Juan Diego Coach Lyons.

The game continued being tight all the way through the fourth quarter with Bountiful taking their first lead at 32-31 on an Erin Wall jumper. The first of two fourth-quarter threes by Rebecca Schmidt gave Bountiful its largest lead of the game, 36-32. Unfortunately for Bountiful, it was also the last lead of the game as Juan Diego hit two threes to take the lead. Robin Wall cut the lead to 38-39 after a long jumper, but that was as close as Bountiful would get, eventually losing 45-41.
