WOODS CROSS -- The Woods Cross Wildcats men's soccer team has picked a bad time to slump. Their 3-0 loss to Olympus at home Tuesday afternoon marked their third loss in four games and dropped the Wildcats behind East for third place in Region 5. The Titans remained unbeaten in league play and also unbeaten for the season with the win. Olympus is now 11-0-2 in Region 5 play and 12-0-3 overall on the season. Funny thing is that Bountiful is 12-1 during league play and is ahead of the Titans in the standings by virtue of their 36 points earned compared to Olympus' 35 points. Both schools square off against each other to decide the Region 5 championship in their season finale before the state tournament starts next week.

Woods Cross was starting to play better soccer about two weeks ago when they improved their league record to 4-3-1. They were the only team in Region 5 other than Olympus and Bountiful to have an above .500 record. Well, that little fact didn't remain true for too long.

The Wildcats promptly went on a losing tear and lost three of their next four games to arrive at where they are now, 5-6-1 in conference play.

Woods Cross has struggled all season long with scoring the soccer ball. The Olympus game was no different as Titan goalkeeper Dustin Jensen collected his fifth shutout in his last six games. Matt Jensen was in goal for Woods Cross and was credited with the loss.

The Titans scored one goal in the first half off Collin Wilson's foot to go into halftime with a narrow 1-0 lead. Woods Cross definitely had their chances in the first half, but they ended up being too few and far between.

The second half was controlled by Olympus. The Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a Dino Busuladzic goal. Andrew Radcliff scored another insurance goal for Olympus later in the second half to ice the game.

Woods Cross finishes off the Region 5 season this coming up Monday down at Highland. The Wildcats should come out with a victory in that one. A Highland win would assure Woods Cross a third place finish and a better seed for the upcoming state tournament.

Woods Cross had trouble with Highland earlier this season in Woods Cross, so nothing is certain. A loss could potentially move the Wildcats down to the fifth place spot, forcing them to draw some other region's number one team in the first round of the tournament.

Needless to say, the Highland game is huge. It potentially could move Woods Cross around to three different places in the Region 5 standings. Definitely the easiest road would be if they won and were simply the third place entrant from Region 5 for the state tournament.

The Wildcats have now been shutout twice in a row in league play. They will need some offense if they want to make some noise in the state tournament. Their defense is solid and has literally carried them to their five overall wins this season.

If Woods Cross can find just that little boost offensively, their defense will carry them over the top to more wins when they need them most, here at the end of the season.
