SALT LAKE CITY -- Two Davis County projects were recognized Wednesday for their innovative efforts to respond to growth pressures and to preserve Utah's high quality of life. The Utah Botanical Center in Kaysville, and the West Point Trails System Master plan were each given awards of merit at the fifth annual Envision Utah Governor's Quality Growth Awards at the Memorial House at Memory Grove. Owned and operated by Utah State University, the Utah Botanical Center was given its Award of Merit for its workshops, demonstration areas and community events, "which inspire Utahns to a more sustainable future."

The project's Utah House incorporates state-of-the-art energy efficiency practices and demonstrates water conserving landscaping through native plants and water harvesting techniques. Fruit and vegetable research account for 180 acres of the center and enhanced wetlands capture storm water and support urban wildlife.

West Point City's Trails System Master Plan was prepared by a citizen's committee. It enhances and creates walking routes in the community, linking parks, trails and neighboring jurisdictions. The plan also includes 3.5 miles of the Historic Emigrant Trail, to be built soon with locally raised funds.

The Grand Award was given to Harvest Park Development in Mapleton. Three awards of excellence and four awards of merit were also given to projects throughout Utah.

For five years, the Quality Growth Awards have recognized outstanding developments and creative communities that help keep the state beautiful, prosperous and neighborly, according to Kevin Fayles, Envision Utah's community relations manager.
