CLEARFIELD -- After months of practicing by members of the new Clearfield Community Band, the group will present its debut performance as part of the city's 4th of July parade, 9:30 that morning. Gretchen Myers conducts the group, which includes performers from both within Clearfield and from surrounding communities. The call for members began last November, with the band now including a variety of instruments. They range from the essential clarinets and saxophones to bass clarinet, piccolo, baritone (euphonium), tuba and percussion. "My vision for the band is that it will be a high quality group which provides an opportunity for adults in the community to perform great music, close to home, in a fun environment," Myers said.

The group plans to present three concerts per year: the 4th of July parade appearance, a holiday concert in November or December and a spring concert.

Myers holds a bachelor's degree in music and vocal performance from San Jose State University. She is an accomplished cellist and a semi-professional singer. She has performed in many musical theater productions and directed children's groups and musical theater productions.

The parade, meanwhile, will also feature an appearance by the Clearfield High School Marching Band and Color Guard, under the direction of Stephen Anderson. About 50 students will be marching and performing in the parade.

Clearfield joins other area cities, including Layton, in organizing a community band. Layton's has been operating for several years, and has performed for a variety of functions. Layton has worked hard for several years to attract bands to its parades, even considering financial incentives.

Applications are still being accepted for the Clearfield parade on a first-come, first- served basis. They can be obtained online at www.clear

fieldcity.org or at the Municipal Building at 55 S. State Street, first floor. There is no entry fee.
